Are you considering a career as a medical coder? Don’t know where to start? Here are some essentials you need to know when you’re looking to start your journey.

1. AAPC and AHIMA certifications are the gold standards. Most coders that code for physician services get certifications through AAPC (most commonly the CPC). Most coders that code for facility/hospital services get certifications through the AHIMA (most commonly CCS).

2. Finding a job is not a given. Medical coding isn’t a special secret field where you can quickly learn how to code and get a high-paying job. You will still need to work for it.

3. Lots of awesome technical schools and community colleges have medical coding programs! Already in healthcare and know the basics? Look for training through the AAPC, AHIMA, or independent instructors!

4. You can find out salary information on the AAPC salary survey. https://www.aapc.com/resources/research/medical-coding-salary-survey/

5. You need to take your medical coding examination with BOOKS and you will likely need to purchase the books (unless you can borrow them) to become a certified coder.
