Today’s conversation has to do with the different medical coding books, variations and editions. I am ONLY referring to the OPTUM360 coding books. I am likewise going over the AMA’s CPT Specialist Edition book.
There are many various publishers out there. I am just familiar with these editions.

MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS: ICD-10- CM Specialist for Physicians.
This book is comprehensive with lots of information and fantastic for any OUTPATIENT setting medical coder. Knows about CMS-HCC’s (Hierarchical Condition Catgeories).
This is the book that I personally utilize.
DIAGNOSIS: ICD-10- CM Professional for Medical Facilities.
Has great deals of information that is terrific for INPATIENT medical coders. Has information about MS-DRG’s, CC, MCC’s, CMS HCC (Hierarchical Condition Categories), HAC (Healthcare Facility Obtained Conditions).
PROCEDURES: CPT EXPERT EDITION.
Great for coders who do the compensation side of the house. It has information about RVU’s, Medicare Icons, Physician Practices, Outpatient Hospitals, ASC (Ambulatory Surgical Treatment Center), MUE (clinically unlikely edits), CPT assist references, CCI (Correct Coding Initiative). NOT FOR USE FOR EXAMINATION USE!
TREATMENTS: CPT EXPERT EDITION.
FOR TEST TAKING! Great deals of great details. Discuss what you can’t code together. Does not emphasize RVU’s. Has anatomy plate and great appendixes with helpful information.
INPATIENT ONLY TREATMENTS: ICD-10- PCS SPECIALIST EDITION.
This book is for coding procedures that were carried out INPATIENT.
