Job Description
The Inpatient Coder II shows the objective, vision, and values of NM, sticks to the company’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and adhere to all pertinent policies, treatments, standards and all other regulatory and accreditation requirements.
The Inpatient Coder II has extensive knowledge and technical competence of ICD-10- CM diagnoses and advanced understanding of complicated surgeries which is required for ICD-10- PCS code assignment. This level of understanding is commensurate with a higher skill inpatient setting. This role requires a strong foundation in coding conventions/instructions, Authorities Standards for Coding and Reporting and Coding Clinics. The Inpatient Coder II has a deep understanding of disease procedure, anatomy/physiology, pharmacology and medical terminology and understands APR and MS-DRG compensation method.
Duties:
- Performs an evaluation of medical record paperwork within CAC (computer system assisted coding) or Epic to identify the suitable primary medical diagnosis, CC’s/ MCC’s, other secondary medical diagnoses and all suitable treatments
- Regularly navigates Legendary’s Doc Review, Health Center Chart or Chart Evaluation beyond CAC in order to report ICD-10 codes
- Makes use of 3M’s encoder resources to ensure optimum coding precision.
- Optimizes CAC to guarantee coding effectiveness
- Thoroughly reads CDS documentation within CAC and contacts the CDS when explanation is required.
- Collaborates frequently, separately with couple of internal escalations with Scientific Documentation Specialists when there is a DRG inequality or inquiry chance to make sure clearness and accuracy of medical record documents.
- Strong composed communication abilities that follows SBAR (Circumstance, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) technique.
- Collaborates with CDS on pre-bill holds since it represents possible compensation chance.
- Pays very close attention to single CC/MCC MS-DRG’s and contacts the CDS for clinical recognition if not documented within CAC.
- Understands the type and degree of coding required when working death cases and comprehends motorists of SOI/ROM (seriousness of illness and danger of death).
- Codes high dollar and interims (30 day length of stay or more) which represent the greatest skill clients at NM.
- Assists OC’s with evaluation of DRG denials and composing appeals.
- Articulates rationale for coding selections when required, i.e. information quality audit.
- Keeps diagnosis, treatment, DRG and general precision within department standard of 95% or better.
- Preserves productivity standard within department requirement of 90% or much better.
Qualifications
Required:
- 3 years of inpatient coding experience in an acute healthcare setting
- RHIA, RHIT or CCS credential
- AHIMA membership
Preferred:
- Partner’s degree in associated field
- RHIA, RHIT with CCS credential
- 3 years of inpatient coding experience in a teaching hospital
